Chad Daybell verdict: sentenced to death in ‘doomsday’ triple-murder of family
Chad Daybell was found guilty on Thursday of killing Tammy Daybell , Joshua “JJ” Vallow, and Tylee Ryan, as well as conspiring to conduct first-degree murder.
The 55-year-old author of Idaho Doomsday, Chad Daybell , was charged with murder and conspiracy to kill his former wife, 49-year-old Tamara “Tammy” Debel, and two of his children, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan. Suffocation was determined to be the cause of their deaths, which happened on October 19, 2019, in their residence, according to investigators. The death penalty was imposed on him on Saturday.
Additionally, Daybell was found guilty of two cases of insurance fraud.
On Saturday, Judge Steven Boyce formally imposed the death penalty after the jury read a long verdict in court expressing their belief that the punishment was justified by the law. Daybell was also given a 15-year prison term by the judge for the insurance fraud accusations.
Prosecutor Rob Wood urged the jury to take into account the grave circumstances that be eligible Daybell for the death penalty during his opening remarks on Friday.
The jury was also informed by Wood that the three victims’ deaths were “particularly heinous, atrocious, or cruel, manifesting exceptional depravity.”
Tammy Daybell was discovered dead at their Idaho home on October 19, 2019, two weeks before Chad Daybell married Tamara Daybell . Authorities suspect that Tylee and JJ were murdered in September 2019, which is also the last month they were seen.
Impact statements were read by a few family members before Saturday’s sentence. Ron Douglas, Tammy Daybell’s father, claimed he was “angered” by the situation.
He said, “It hurts me deeply to see Tammy treated this way.”
Tammy Daybell was the “heart and glue” for her siblings, according to her brother Matthew Douglas. Benjamin Douglas talked about how the loss of his sister had affected him.
He continued, “My children only know their aunt Tammy through pictures, stories, and a marker at a grave they often request to visit.” “They only know their father who struggles greatly with grief and worry.”
Kay Woodcock, Joshua’s grandmother, spoke to the court as well. She continued, “There is a hole in the heart of every member of my family that can never be filled and will be with us for the rest of our lives.”
