PGA Tour golfer Grayson Murray dies at age 30 :
PGA Tour golfer Grayson Murray dies at 30, one day after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, according to PGA Tour authorities.
Murray was 30 years old. There were no immediate information about his cause of death.
“We were devastated to learn — and are heartbroken to share — that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in the statement.
“The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same,” Monahan continued. “We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”
Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, withdrew from the tournament on Friday with two holes remaining in the second round due to sickness.
Murray’s management company, GSE Worldwide, announced his passing and expressed heartbreak.
Murray won the Sony Open in a playoff earlier this year over former PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley and South Korea’s An Byeong-hun, ending a six-and-a-half-year winless streak during which he admitted to dealing with mental health and physical concerns.
Murray was already a great golfer at the age of 30. He won three consecutive Junior World Championships from 2006 to 2008 and was considered among the top players in his age group. At the age of 16, he made his maiden Corn Ferry Tour cut, becoming the second youngest player to do so. After attending Wake Forest University, East Carolina University, and Arizona State University, he took a well-deserved sabbatical in 2016. During this time, he received a sponsor exemption for the Corn Ferry Tour event near his hometown in North Carolina. His performance in the Rex Hospital Open earned him a top ten finish, paving the way for another bright start.
His professional career took off after he finished in the top ten in the BMW Charity Pro-Am. He finished her season with a win at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship, finishing second on the Corn Ferry Tour money list and gaining full PGA Tour status for the 2016-17 season. This victory occurred just one week before his 23rd birthday.
