Memorial Day is generally known as “Decoration Day”, with roots reaching back to the years following the Civil War before becoming an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans honor Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, having family gatherings, and marching in parades. Informally, it marks the start of the summer season.
History of Memorial Day :-
Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, a well-known organization of Union veterans, the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), was founded. Memorial Day is a time to decorate the nation, with flowers placed on the graves of those lost in the conflict. Major General John A. Logan announced that it will be observed on May 30th. This date was chosen because it was expected that flowers would be in bloom all around the country.
Importance of Memorial Day :-
On this historic day, flowers are placed on the graves of dead warriors as a tribute. Some people place American flags atop banners honoring heroes who gave their lives in defense of the country. National Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of the summer season in America.
Memorial Day Tradition :-
Every year, cities and towns around the United States conduct Memorial Day parades, which frequently include troops and members of veteran organizations. Some of the largest parades occur in Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C.
People remember Memorial Day by visiting American cemeteries and memorials. Some people wear red poppies to remember those who ended up in the war, a tradition that began with a poem from the First World War era. On a less somber note, many people take weekend trips or organize parties and barbecues, which may explain why Memorial Day weekend, which runs from the Saturday before Memorial Day to the Monday after, is informally regarded as the start of summer, including Memorial Day and the preceding Saturday and Sunday.
